The Appalachian Young Writers' Workshop is a seven-day residential writing workshop providing creative young people the opportunity to explore the craft of writing.
Set in the Appalachian Mountains in Harrogate, TN students learn from the region's foremost writers of fiction, creative non-fiction, lyrics, and poetry.

Rising 10th, 11th, 12th graders, and graduating seniors. who have a sincere interest in creative writing and the Appalachian region.
WHERE
Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN, near the borders of Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky. All classes take place at the university and students stay in dorms on campus.
TUITION
$450 for the entire week. Includes room and board, all class materials, Workshop T-shirt, and class instruction.

RES LIFE
Residential life at the AYWW is in supervised residence halls with Workshop counselors on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University.
Roommate requests are honored when possible.
Students have access to the university library and computer lab during the week.
When possible, recreational facilities are available to students on campus.

ClASSES
The maximum student to teacher ratio at the AYWW is 12:1.
This ensures that all students receive personal attention and instruction from the Workshop’s exceptional faculty and staff.
Students attend workshop classes in fiction, lyric writing, poetry, and more each day.

HOW TO APPLY
WORKSHOP APPLICATIONS INCLUDE
A CURRENT WRITING SAMPLE
All applications must include a recent writing sample (no more than 5,000 words). This may be a poem, short story, creative nonfiction essay, play, etc. This does not have to be something from school.
APPLYING FOR A SHOLARSHIP?
Scholarships are available to students who demonstrate financial need and writing merit.
Students interested in a scholarship will need to upload 2 supporting documents to their applications:
1. A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FROM ENGLISH TEACHER
Please include a letter of recommendation written by applicant's English teacher. If the teacher prefers to send it separately, please have the letter emailed to patrick@humtn.org or mailed to Humanities Tennessee | 807 Main Street Suite B | Nashville, TN 37206.
2. A COPY OF THE FAMILY'S MOST RECENT 1040 TAX FORM
Please include a copy of the family’s most recently filed 1040 statement that claims the applicant as a dependent. If no 1040 is required by the IRS, then a statement which shows the family's financial standing may be attached.
Scholarship applicants do not need to send a deposit. Students will be notified of their scholarship status by early-June. Scholarship assistance varies from $100 to $450.
